Korean Beauty, or K-beauty for short, refers to a specific type of skincare product, trend, and routine originating from South Korea. Korean beauty has gained global popularity, and the K-beauty products are part of every skincare store shelf. Moreover, Korean skincare techniques include sheet masking and double-cleansing. In this blog, we will examine a specific skincare routine known as the Korean 10-step skincare routine, which offers a comprehensive approach to skincare by addressing various skin concerns.
Korean Skincare's 10-step routine involves a comprehensive skincare regimen that begins with cleansing, followed by exfoliation, hydration, and, finally, skin protection to maintain healthy skin. At each step, a different product is used to address a specific skin issue, thereby improving the skin condition. The 10-step Korean skincare routine is not a fixed one, and the products used vary according to the user's skin type. In this article, we will outline a general-purpose 10-step skincare routine suitable for all skin types.
The oil cleanser is the foundation of the Korean skincare routine. These cleansers wipe away skin surface impurities by dissolving them. The oil-based skin cleansers also remove makeup and excess natural oil that can cause the skin to become oily. The benefit of an oil cleanser is that it hydrates the skin, keeping it soft. Other cleansers that are not oil-based excessively dry out the skin. Oil cleansers are available in two types: liquid cleansers and cleansing balms. Both of them are equally effective. The final result keeps the skin moisturized and smooth.
Once you have cleansed the skin with an oil-based cleanser, some impurities remain. To perform a deep cleanse, you must apply a water-based cleanser. This cleanser type removes the residual impurities left by the oil cleanser. Water-based cleansers come in gel or foam form. Water-based cleansers can have a dehydrating effect on the skin, but some types also have a hydrating effect if chosen. If you have dry skin, you should use hydrating water-based cleansers with a pH value of 5.5.
Our skin cells eventually die out and accumulate on the skin's surface. The accumulation of dead skin cells on the surface dulls the complexion. Moreover, skin pores can also become clogged with sebum, resulting in excessively oily skin. To resolve this, an exfoliator is used to remove the dead cells and blackheads. Exfoliators are acids, and some strong ones can damage the skin if used excessively; therefore, using them once a week is sufficient. Mild exfoliators can be used daily, but even then, the skin needs to develop tolerance to them. Therefore, it's best to start with once a week and then increase the frequency.
Skin repair is a crucial aspect of skincare, and toner is the product that helps achieve this in skincare routines. Not only does it repair the skin, but it also helps balance the skin's pH level. Applying toner also facilitates the absorption of additional products that will be applied to the skin. A specialty of Korena toners is that they do not contain alcohols that dry the skin. These toners are less irritating on the skin and also provide better moisturization than toners containing alcohol.
Perhaps the defining feature of Korean skincare is the essences themselves—hydrating, lighter, yet drenched in water with moisturizing, protective, and anti-aging elements that keep your skin hydrated, well-balanced, and healthy while also serving as a cleansing and toning agent for further enhancement of any products applied for treatment.
A hydrated and healthy skin is much less prone to irritation and dullness, yet draws upon more nutrients.
Serums are the richest sources of potent ingredients that address specific skin concerns, such as wrinkles, dark circles, hyperpigmentation, and acne. Serums are more concentrated with active ingredients and generally thicker in texture compared to essences. Apply this product once a week for good results.
The mask is the heart of a Korean skincare routine. You apply sheet masks semi-weekly to replenish your skin with nutrients and moisture. The wash-off masks help eliminate deeply rooted impurities from the skin while exfoliating it. The sleep masks help add an extra layer of moisture to the skin while you sleep.
Adding face masks to the routine helps provide that extra boost to the skin while also being a very relaxing and rejuvenating way to use them.
Eye creams and eye patches target the most sensitive and delicate areas of the skin, addressing concerns such as dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines. All our eye care products are carefully formulated with gentle, extra ingredients.
We recommend applying eye cream daily, both in the morning and at night. Then, the eye patches can be used daily or as needed on various days of the week.
Moisturizers are available in various forms, including creams, gels, lotions, and oils, and some even contain sunscreen. Moisturizers are the final step to help lock in all the super-hydrating products used before them. While it does introduce more hydration, its primary function is to prevent moisture from leaving the skin (transepidermal water loss).
Many people prefer to use a moisturizer in the morning and a different one at night. Some people tend to prefer lighter, gel moisturizers for the daytime and a more emollient, heavy moisturizer at night. The most important thing is that the moisturizer fits your skin type.
You should always apply sunscreen on top of a moisturizer in your morning routine. A sunscreen should have broad-spectrum protection, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays, as indicated by both SPF and PA ratings.
Sunscreens are generally classified as chemical or mineral sunscreens, depending on the active ingredients they contain. Chemical sunscreens filter out the damaging rays of the sun through chemicals. Mineral sunscreens utilize active ingredients that reflect the sun's rays. Both are effective in terms of sun protection; however, we generally prefer mineral sunscreens for pregnant women and those with very sensitive skin. Older sunscreens often get a bad rap for causing white casts or a pungent, chemical scent. But newer Korean Skincare brands' sunscreens are a different story. Most blend well into the skin, so there is no visible white cast, and the fragrances are not strong, or they are even fragrance-free. Most have very hydrating skin benefits as well.
The 10-step Korean skincare routine is comprehensive yet versatile, allowing it to be tailored to suit the individual needs of different people. With a diverse range of skincare products available, you can easily experiment with other brands of toners, sunscreens, and moisturizers to develop an ideal Korean skincare routine tailored to your specific skin type. So, do not hesitate to try different products, but keep the order in which you apply them the same. With the right approach, you can fine-tune this skin routine to deliver fabulous results that transform your skin.
